A TRIP TO GRAN CANARIA, 

EXPLORING THE INTERIOR.

PART ONE.



We set off for our fourth trip to the beautiful volcanic Canarian island of Gran Canaria, based for 12 days in Amadores in the south west of the island.

Looking down to Liverpool and the river 
Mersey as it flows into the sea.


Turn left at Ireland.

WHAT a coincidence - the flight magazine had the picture of our resort! See those cliffs at the end of the beach? Watch this space.


After just over four hours - we saw Canary land!

We were soon settled in, and decided to sit down on our balcony to take in our first sunset. Amadores is renowned as one of the best places on Gran Canaria for sunsets, and our view looked STRAIGHT down the barrel!


Then it was time to eat. Amadores has lots of restaurants on the beach. It's a fairly young resort, so is tailored to tourism.
This one became one of our favourites - the Monaco steak house.
Paella for me, local fish for Sue.





We were curious all the hotels and apartments perched high on the cliffs to the right so, next morning, we decided to walk up and investigate.
This is the view over Amadores bay from up there.

Looking the opposite way is Playa de Tauro.
This is small and, as yet, very minimally developed. We'd been here before a couple of years ago, and found a super cafe bar on the beach. Alas, we found out it was now closed - another victim of covid.

Halfway up, we noticed this sad, quiet and deserted bar and shop. The girl inside looked terminally bored, so we went in for a beer. We ended up buying ice cream and wine to take away.

Later that night, it was time to sample more local delights - squid rings for me - sweet lamb cutlets for Sue, some of the best we'd ever tasted, and done PERFECTLY!

At the end of your meal, it's the custom here in the Canaries to give you a drink on the house. These were honey rum.

  PART THREE - EXPLORING THE INTERIOR. To go to this island (and many others) and just lie on a beach is a travesty! The interior is so starkly beautiful and has so much history, you really MUST go and explore. The roads are in pretty good condition, but being old roads, they are quite winding. I imagine they could be a little intimidating to some people, but me? I LOVE driving them! There are many examples of cave house on the island, some very basic, some look quite luxurious. One of the villages we passed through was Molino de Viento. Viento suggests windy, and there's the remains of a windmill here. I have read you can go in it, when it's open, but it was closed up when we were there. These coloured rocks were something  I remembered from our first visit to the island back in 2018. I really wanted to see them again, and here they were. Google says;  The spectacular jade green outcrops and ochre and reddish tones laid bare by erosion are the result of the explosive mee...

  PART SIX - PUERTO MOGAN & THE YELLOW  BOAT TRIP. Today we'd booked a trip on the yellow boat from Puerto Mogan. It's rated as the top thing to do on trip advisor - we were to find out that it was well deserved! Puerto Mogan is also known as little Venice, because  of the many little 'canals'. This is one of the many flowery back streets. This is the harbour/marina. No cars are allowed on the front - this makes it even more attractive for a relaxing walk and a coffee, cocktail or meal. We never expected to see a bandstand, but this lovely little centre attraction looks perfect! Unfortunately, we've never seen it used for anything. Gran Canaria 2024, based in Amadores, part two.

  PART TWO. Amadores has many places to eat but strangely, no bars! You can obviously go into any of the restaurants to just have a beer, but none of them play any music of any kind, so they feel a bit 'soulless'. If you want more life, you have to go to Puerto Rico, just around the headland. It's either a cheap taxi ride (€5-6) or a very pleasant walk along the traffic free promenade. This is looking up to our hotel, the Mirador Atlantico.  Apparently, they had had a rockfall last year above the Gloria Palace hotel, so they were netting the cliff face all the time we were there. You can see the crane boom reaching up to lift the men who were doing the work. As we set off, I think we surprised this bin :-) This specially built walk is a delight.  It only takes about 25 minutes to walk to Puerto Rico. The view from it is really good.
