Gran Canaria 2024, based in Amadores, part five.
ROQUE NUBLO.
As we had a hire car for a few days, we were keen to drive the interior roads to re-visit Roque Nublo, the site where it's thought magma erupted to form the whole island.
On a clear day, the views here are astounding! When we arrived, however, the cloud was down low, the car park was full to bursting, and it was cold! 😨😨
Unused to this, we were wondering what to do. I decided these things could change in a flash, so we found somewhere to park, and set off on the path up to the Roque. Within ten minutes, conditions improved immensely, and from then on, it was just great!
The slopes are tree-covered at first, with glimpses through to huge vistas of this volcanic land.
This rock is known as 'The Bishop', and stands to the
left of the path up.
About three quarters of the way up is this signpost, but our way was only one way - up!
Looking back and now down to 'The Bishop'.
Very soon, the trees disappeared, and vegetation became sparse in this harsh environment. This small patch of flowers attracted lots of photographers. The Roque towered ahead of us - excitement!
Tell me this isn't one of the best views ever? The camera really can't convey just how stunning it is up here. You HAVE to go.
Sitting & taking it all in - not an experience to be rushed.
Phenomenal views from Roque Nublo on this perfect day, around the valley towards Tejeda and looking over to Tenerife and Mount Teide.
This 'eyehole' in the rocks is another much-photographed feature.
Some youngsters asked if I would take their picture perched on top of this volcanic column.
Of course, I had a turn too!
Twisty tracks were evident all over the terrain.
There were quite a few people up there, but not as many as the full car park would suggest.
Big, blue skies, and a perfect temperature.
We saw these volcanic bubble holes on the way up, so decided to have a look on the way back.
On the drive back, we called in at the Barranco viewpoint. We've been here before, but it's so impressive, you can't just drive past.
Those clouds look threatening, but they amounted to nothing.
That was it for the hire car - we dropped it off at the office.
On a previous night, we walked the coast promenade to Puerto Rico. We'd had SUCH a great steak here then that we decided to revisit, since we were already here (and getting hungry). This time, we shared a plate of padron peppers as a starter.
Yes, that's ONE portion!!
The steak is served rare on a hot plate, but you can let it continue to cook to your liking, or take it off and get stuck in!
Cheers!
Again, a great sunset on the walk back to Amadores 😍
And so to bed - relaxed and happy with another great day in Gran Canaria.
